    Corporate Governance, Capital Structure, Ownership Structure, And Corporate Value Of Companies Listed At The Nairobi Securities Exchange

    This paper focuses on establishing the relationship among corporate governance, capital structure, ownership structure, and firm value for companies listed at the Nairobi Security Exchange (NSE). The study tested three hypotheses that explored various aspects of this relationship: First, there is no intervening effect on the capital structure on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value; Second, there is no significant moderating effect of ownership structure on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value; and finally, there is no significant joint effect of corporate governance, capital structure, and ownership structure on corporate value. The data of the study was obtained from audited financial statements of the firms listed at the NSE. A census survey for sixty-four publicly trading firms at the NSE was undertaken. The data of 64 corporations was cleaned, leaving a smaller number of 58 firms which formed over 90% of the sample. The analysis covered a five-year period between 2013 to 2017. The study adopted a positivism philosophy and a descriptive design. Descriptive statistics and diagnostic tests were undertaken and thereafter inferential statistics, specifically correlation and regression analysis, were used for hypothesis testing. The multiple regression analysis was used to test the relationship among corporate governance, capital structure, ownership structure, and corporate value. The panel data procedure was considered more appropriate as the sample data contained both cross-sectional and time-series data. The Baron and Kenny’s (1986) approach was used to assess the intervening and moderating effect of capital structure and ownership structure respectively on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value. Corporate Governance was measured by a composite of board independence, board size, board remuneration, and corporate gender diversity. Capital structure was measured by leverage, while ownership structure was measured by ownership concentration, state ownership, family ownership, and foreign ownership. Firm performance was measured using the Tobin Q. The joint effect of corporate governance, capital structure, and ownership structure on corporate value was found to be positive and significant. However, Ownership structure and capital structure had no significant moderating and intervening effects respectively on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value. This study makes an original contribution as it takes a more holistic approach of corporate governance development by probing whether improving corporate governance is linked to the enhanced corporate value. The study recommends that corporate shareholders, boards, regulators, and management of listed corporations should put in place robust policies. This will ensure the implementation and monitoring of corporate governance principles and ensure congruence in their activities of the oversight of corporate objectives of optimizing corporate value and minimizing fraud and failure risks of corporations

    The capital market authorities of different areas have from time to time issued regulations and guidelines for good corporate governance practices ensuring thorough and proper management of listed companies to align the interest of all stakeholders, ensure firm sustainability, and optimize corporate value. Despite these interventions, cases of corporate underperformance and failures attributed to financial distress and governance weakness continue to increase in magnitude and frequency. The main objective of the study was to determine the intervening effect of capital structure on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value of companies listed at the Nairobi Security Exchange (NSE). The study tests hypothesis that there is no intervening effect on the capital structure on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value for companies listed at the NSE. The key theories underpinning the study were agency theory as the main guiding theory and the trade-off theory. The data was acquired from past audited financial statements of companies listed at the NSE. The study used a census survey for sixty-four listed companies at the NSE. The panel data procedure was considered more appropriate as the sample data contained both cross-sectional and time-series data. The diagnostics tests were used to test for bias in the model and the regression used to test the strength and direction of the variables. Baron and Kenny (1986) approach was used to test the intervening effect of capital structure on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value. The finding was that capital structure had no significant intervening effects on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate value. This research contributes to the line of literature that examines the desirability of corporate governance in enhancing corporate value. These insights in explaining corporate governance, capital structure, and corporate value relationships are useful for academic understanding and business and public policy formulations.     As in other developing countries, diarrhoea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Indo­nesia. It is estimated that at least 4-5 million deaths per year in the world are caused by acute di­arrhoea. In Indonesia, 40% of deaths in the first 2 years of life is caused by acute diarrhoea. This study is to assess the microbial agents of diarrhoea! disease, from patients of 2 hospitals in Ja­karta. Rectal swabs for bacteriological examination were collected from patients at the admission using Cary & Blair as a transport media. Stools for Rota virus examination were collected in a tube container and kept at 4- 6°C before further processing. Conventional bacteriological procedures were performed for isolation and identification of bacterial agents. Enterotoxigenic E. Coli (E T E Cj was examined by ELISA for LT and by intragastric inocula­tion of suckling mice for ST. Campylobacter was incubated at 42°C in a candle jar using desiccator as a jar. The isolation results from 1937 specimens collected were V. cholera 01 50,2%, Rota virus 31,0%, ETEC 6,8%, Campylobacter sp 4,8%, Salmonella sp 4,3%, V. parahaemolyticus 1,6%, NAG 0,9%, Shi­gella sp 0,8%, Y. enterocolytica 0,2% and mixed infection of 2 or 3 different agent 5%. Most of the V. cholera isolated were of the Ogawa sero-type (98,9%). ETEC consisted of 69,2% LT alone, 21,4% ST alone and 8,9% both LT and ST. The most prevalent among 10 Salmonella species isolated were S. oranienberg 34,9% and S. kreveld 21,7%. The most prevalent among 4 species of Shigella isolated were Sh. flexneri 43,8% and Sh. dysen-triae 31,3%. Diarrhoeal diseases were continuously found through the year with 2 peaks; one high peak in May, June and July and the other lower peak in December and January

    peer reviewedThe coexistence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia has been recently considered in some groups as a syndrome termed 'osteosarcopenia'. Osteoporosis describes low bone mass and deterioration of the micro-architecture of the bone, whereas sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass, strength and function. With an ageing population the prevalence of both conditions is likely to increase substantially over the coming decades and is associated with significant personal and societal burden. The sequelae for an individual suffering from both conditions together include a greater risk of falls, fractures, institutionalization and mortality. The aetiology of 'osteosarcopenia' is multifactorial with several factors linking muscle and bone function, including genetics, age, inflammation and obesity. Several biochemical pathways have been identified that are facilitating the development of several promising therapeutic agents, which target both muscle and bone. In the current review we outline the epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical consequences of 'osteosarcopenia' and explore current and potential future management strategies

    The effect of FTO variation on increased osteoarthritis risk is mediated through body mass index : a mendelian randomisation study

    Objective: Variation in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene influences susceptibility to obesity. A variant in the FTO gene has been implicated in genetic risk to osteoarthritis (OA). We examined the role of the FTO polymorphism rs8044769 in risk of knee and hip OA in cases and controls incorporating body mass index (BMI) information. Methods: 5409 knee OA patients, 4355 hip OA patients and up to 5362 healthy controls from 7 independent cohorts from the UK and Australia were genotyped for rs8044769. The association of the FTO variant with OA was investigated in case/control analyses with and without BMI adjustment and in analyses matched for BMI category. A mendelian randomisation approach was employed using the FTO variant as the instrumental variable to evaluate the role of overweight on OA. Results: In the meta-analysis of all overweight (BMI≥25) samples versus normal-weight controls irrespective of OA status the association of rs8044769 with overweight is highly significant (OR[CIs] for allele G=1.14 [01.08 to 1.19], p=7.5×10−7). A significant association with knee OA is present in the analysis without BMI adjustment (OR[CIs]=1.08[1.02 to 1.14], p=0.009) but the signal fully attenuates after BMI adjustment (OR[CIs]=0.99[0.93 to 1.05], p=0.666). We observe no evidence for association in the BMI-matched meta-analyses. Using mendelian randomisation approaches we confirm the causal role of overweight on OA. Conclusions: Our data highlight the contribution of genetic risk to overweight in defining risk to OA but the association is exclusively mediated by the effect on BMI. This is consistent with what is known of the biology of the FTO gene and supports the causative role of high BMI in OA

    Maternal serum retinol and B-carotene concentrations and neonatal bone mineralisation: Results from the Southampton Women's Survey cohort

    Background: studies in older adults and animals have suggested contrasting relations between bone health and different vitamin A compounds. To our knowledge, the associations between maternal vitamin A status and offspring bone development have not previously been elucidated.Objective: we examined the associations between maternal serum retinol and ?-carotene concentrations during late pregnancy and offspring bone mineralization assessed at birth with the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.Design: in the Southampton Women’s Survey mother-offspring birth cohort, maternal health, lifestyle, and diet were assessed prepregnancy and at 11 and 34 wk of gestation. In late pregnancy, maternal serum retinol and ?-carotene concentrations were measured. Offspring total body bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone area (BA) were measured within 2 wk after birth.Results: in total, 520 and 446 mother-offspring pairs had measurements of maternal serum retinol and ?-carotene, respectively. Higher maternal serum retinol in late pregnancy was associated with lower offspring total body BMC (? = ?0.10 SD/SD; 95% CI: ?0.19, ?0.02; P = 0.020) and BA (? = ?0.12 SD/SD; 95% CI: ?0.20, ?0.03; P = 0.009) but not BMD. Conversely, higher maternal serum ?-carotene concentrations in late pregnancy were associated with greater total body BMC (? = 0.12 SD/SD; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.21; P = 0.016) and BA (? = 0.12 SD/SD; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.22; P = 0.010) but not BMD.Conclusions: maternal serum retinol and ?-carotene concentrations had differing associations with offspring bone size and growth at birth: retinol was negatively associated with these measurements, whereas ?-carotene was positively associated.     Characterization of superconducting through-silicon vias as capacitive elements in quantum circuits

    The large physical size of superconducting qubits and their associated on-chip control structures presents a practical challenge towards building a large-scale quantum computer. In particular, transmons require a high-quality-factor shunting capacitance that is typically achieved by using a large coplanar capacitor. Other components, such as superconducting microwave resonators used for qubit state readout, are typically constructed from coplanar waveguides which are millimeters in length. Here we use compact superconducting through-silicon vias to realize lumped element capacitors in both qubits and readout resonators to significantly reduce the on-chip footprint of both of these circuit elements. We measure two types of devices to show that TSVs are of sufficient quality to be used as capacitive circuit elements and provide a significant reductions in size over existing approaches
